Rain stops play in St Lucia

Rain put a dampener on day three of the ITF/GSDF 12 and under competition in St Lucia yesterday with no play on the courts up to midday yesterday.

Bermuda pair Ben Jones and Tre Mallory are competing in the tournament held at the National Tennis Centre.

A contingency plan has been put in place because of the bad weather, whereby a reduced number of teams will qualify for the main draw and thus have a second chance to place in the top three.

Instead of the top two teams from the round-robin pool advancing, only the winner of each group will qualify, meaning four teams will start the next stage of competition in a semi-final bracket. As the top three teams qualify for the Masters competition in Mexico in November, at least one win from the semi-final stage will earn a spot for the competition.

Bermuda must win their final round-robin match in order to qualify. Currently they stand level with Guyana, their next opponents in group C.

When play resumes Jones will take on Antionne Andres in the No 2 spot, before Mallory’s match against Vijay Sharma at No 1. The same players match up for the doubles in a best of three matches format.

In addition to the top three places, the remaining countries will have been placed from positions four to thirteen. Bermuda have not entered a girls’ team in the competition.
