Two former vendors of Warwick’s Rubber Tree Market had enough of standing under a canopy in all weathers selling their wares — so they decided to team up and upgrade to their own store.

And the move is paying off for Janet Perinchief and Delarie Outerbridge, who have seen brisk business at ‘The Plaza at 122 East’ on Middle Road in Warwick in the three months since it opened.

The Plaza sells a wide range of goods, from women’s and children’s clothes to accessories and toys.

The owners say they aim to sell “quality stuff at a reasonable price” and that this appears to be striking a chord with cost-conscious shoppers.

“Business has been fantastic,” Ms Outerbridge said, adding that the store’s grand opening will take place on Saturday, September 6.

“We have a great location between the Lindo’s grocery store and the Island Spice restaurant and we’re right on the roadside. People like the fact that we’re cost efficient and we’ve already had a lot of repeat customers.”

The name ‘The Plaza’ is designed to convey the idea that the store offers a bit of everything, like a shopping plaza — albeit on a smaller scale.

Ms Outerbridge, who was one of the Rubber Tree Market vendors for five years, said “it was hard to put your tent up in the wind and rain”. So she and Ms Perinchief looked for a place to rent and eventually found the right place at 122 Middle Road.

The best selling item at the store is women’s plus-size clothing — they stock X to XXXXXX — said Ms Outerbridge. She added that the plus-size population was not well catered to in Bermuda and that this was a gap in the market the store intended to exploit.

The Plaza at 122 East is open from 9am to 7pm from Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday.
