Two fatalities on our roads in July

Two people died and 12 suffered serious injuries and another 62 had minor injuries on Bermuda’s roads last month, the latest police figures have revealed.

The figures for July bring the total number of people killed on the roads this year to eight, with 73 serious injuries. There were five people arrested after collisions last month for drink driving, compared to nine the previous July.

By July last year, a total of 52 people had been arrested for impaired driving after an accident compared to 31 for the first seven months of 2014.

There were a further 393 minor injuries — bringing the total casualty figures for the year-to-date to 483.

July last year saw no deaths on the roads, although there were six more serious injuries.

And the total number of roads deaths by July last year was also smaller — with five road fatalities.

The biggest cause of collisions last month was inattention while driving (31 accidents), with inexperience listed as the cause of 18 accidents. Wet roads and following too close to the vehicle in front were each the cause of ten accidents, while overtaking carelessly or joining a main road caused eight accidents apiece.

And — according to last month’s totals — Bermuda resident men were more likely to be involved in accidents than women (111 compared to 80) with 13 male tourists involved in accidents compared to seven women.

July’s figures bring the total number of Bermuda resident men involved in crashes to the end of last month to 852, compared to 542 women.

The corresponding figures for tourists were 43 men and 44 women.
