Bay finish on a high
Bailey’s Bay finished a creditable third in the Premier Division after closing out their league campaign with their sixth victory.
Bay’s players had to endure a two-hour wait after a heavy shower at 3.40pm sent them off the field with just 24 runs needed for victory.
When play was set to restart at 5.41pm the Bay target was revised to 99 in 40 overs — which they had scored in 21.2 overs — and they were declared the winners.
A dashing 31 not out by left-hander Jermaine Usher had paced Bay’s run chase, Usher hitting three fours and two sixes in a stand of 50 for the third wicket with Tre Manders.
The win lifted Bay ahead of Willow Cuts in the standings, Cuts having already completed their league schedule.
The Somerset batting lacked a major contributor with Joshua Gilbert, batting at No 3, scoring 30 and Raoul Khan 23.
Somerset lost their first wicket on the fourth ball of the match when opener Greg Maybury was bowled by Kyle Hodsoll.
The innings recovered briefly but not enough to post a challenging total for Bay as Rodney Trott and Burton Outerbridge led their bowling with three wickets apiece.
Trott claimed three for 41 from nine overs and Outerbridge three for 38 off seven while Hodsoll took two for ten at the top of the innings.
Jekon Edness and Isaiah Richardson offered some resistance late in the innings with 15 apiece to rescue Somerset from 81 for eight. Richardson was not out.
