While Dominique Mayho continued to dominate local racing category at the top end, juniors Tyler Smith and Christian Oatley put on an impressive show in the Winners Edge Criterium in Hamilton yesterday.

Racing in the B category, Smith was the main protagonist, making several breaks on the front before setting out solo with ten laps to go, gradually extending his lead until he accumulated a lead of half a lap on the chasing group. Smith, who is recently back from the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, where he appeared as a triathlete, is one of seven junior cyclists who will be representing Bermuda at the Junior Caribbean Championships in Suriname next month.

Oatley, Smith’s team-mate at national level, did the majority of the chasing work in the early stages of the 30-lap race and then, with three laps to go, he jumped off the front and held off the rest of the peloton to take a solid second place, followed by Dennis Joell in third.

Mayho’s victory in the A category came after 40 laps of racing in which the winner and five others broke away from the main group before eventually lapping the field. Brian Drea, Mayho’s team-mate, eventually fell off the pace, leaving him to battle a pair of Winners Edge riders, Mark Hatherley and Darren Glasford, plus one each from Tokio (Shannon Lawrence) and Fast Forward Bicycle Works (Daniel Oatley).

Hatherley, Lawrence and Mayho attempted to push the pace harder but the quintet went into the final lap together, with Mayho’s sprinting ability making the difference in him taking the win ahead of Hatherley and Glasford.

Winners in the other categories were Sean Dickinson (Adult C), Karen Bordage (Women), Kaden Hopkins (Junior A), Malik Joell (Junior B) and Alexander Southern (Junior C).

The Bermuda Bicycle Association will resume action on September 21 with a road race starting in Dockyard.

Next weekend, local riders Mayho, Glasford, Hatherley, Anthony Bartley, and Zoenique Williams head to the United States to race in the Pensacola Cycling Classic, a two-day, three-stage in the Florida panhandle.
