Children enjoy camp experience

More than 125 of the Island’s children are heading back to school after enjoying a summer of camp experiences courtesy of local insurers, the OIL Group of Companies.

For the second year, the corporation donated $71,500 to the Coalition for the Protection of Children — so that young people who would otherwise be “very likely bored, lonely and possibly unsupervised” could have a chance to experience dance, theatre, basketball, football, art, sailing, drama and academic help, according to the Coalition’s Sheelagh Cooper.

Ms Cooper said one eight-year-old girl had declared it “the best summer ever” after getting sent to a filmmaking camp.

“The children that benefit because of the amazing foresight and generosity of OIL are all children that we see throughout the school year and whose parents are struggling financially,” she said.

“These have been very hard times for the more than 500 families that the Coalition assists throughout the year. We’re hugely grateful that there are companies like OIL that recognise and respond to these challenges in such a generous way.”

According to Gail Miller, OIL Group’s vice president of human resources and administration, the company’s relationship with the Coalition began last year with providing summer camp funds for about 70 children who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to go.
