Perozzi ready to unleash ‘super powers’

Ring return: Terozzi, above in action in her last bout against Nelson, will face Reis at Berkeley Institute

Teresa Perozzi believes her new baby boy has given her “super powers” as she prepares for her long-awaited return to the ring against American Kali Reis.

The Bermuda boxer will defend her WBA middleweight title against Reis, of Rhode Island, at Berkeley Institute on November 1 in a bout that she will promote herself with the help of main sponsor Beyond Fitness.

It will be Perozzi’s first match-up since her second successive draw against Tori Nelson, of the United States, at the same venue in February 2013, having put her career on hold after giving birth to Gabriel, her second child, in March.

The 40-year-old admits that Reis, who lost to Nelson via unanimous decision last November, is somewhat of unknown quantity but said that she feels refreshed and inspired after her break from the ring.

“It’s been 5½ months since I had my baby and I think a few people thought that I might call it a day,” said Perozzi, who returned to CrossFit training just a week after giving birth.

“But I feel great and I’m feeling reinspired — I really think the baby has given me super powers!

“I don’t know too much about [Reis] other than her record is similar to mine, although I have a few more wins than her.

“I had a few options before taking this fight and in the end it all came down to the dollars.”

She may be approaching the twilight years of her boxing career, but Perozzi is adamant that she has at least two good years left in her tank in which to fulfil her ambition of unifying the WBA and WBC belts.

The southpaw was twice denied achieving that goal, drawing against Nelson for the vacant WBC strap; first at The Fairmont Southampton in October 2012 and again in the rematch at Berkeley four months later.

“As long as I still have the motivation inside of me, I think I can carry on for a couple more years,” said Perozzi, who withdrew from a bout against Yaharia Hernández, of the Dominican Republic, scheduled for last November after becoming pregnant.

“I would love to unify the WBA and WBC belts; that’s my ultimate goal. Because of finances, I will just be defending my WBA title [against Reis] and it’s time for a win — no more draws!”

Perozzi, who has a record of nine wins, four draws and three defeats, has teamed up with Beyond Fitness, a new gymnasium that is set to open next week, to help share the burden of organising and promoting her bout against Reis.

She intends to split her training camp between the Par-La-Ville Road facility and Forty Rego’s Gym in Warwick, under the guidance of trainer Troy Darrell, one of Bermuda’s most decorated former pugilists.

“I really wanted to get back into the ring, so I will be promoting this fight myself,” Perozzi said. “Obviously I can’t do everything myself, with all the training and having a baby, so Beyond Fitness will be coming on board as the title sponsor.

“They will be taking care of all of the organisational stuff for me. I’ve got two months to really prepare and, although I’m a little rusty, I feel great fitness-wise.

“I just need to tune my boxing muscles back up a little bit.”

Reis, who was beaten by Mikaela Lauren, of Stockholm, in her last fight in July, has a record of six wins, three losses and one draw.

The 28-year-old will be making the step up from light-middleweight.
