Not enough bus shelters

July 24, 2014

Dear Sir,

Bermuda started a local bus service in the mid-1940s, more than 60 years ago. In 60 years a succession of governments have given such low priority to the provision of bus shelters on its main routes that most of our trunk routes have no shelters at more than half of their stops. A resident who cannot afford a car uses a bus day and night for transport to work and to recreation. Bermuda is famous for squalls, gusts of wind, and even more severe weather conditions.

This stands out as one in which the needs of the less affluent members of our community have been ignored for far too long. We need to give this top priority after we get through our economic crisis.
