A grand celebration planned for Eileen Tucker’s 92nd

Eileen Simons Tucker on the right above, turns 92 Sunday. She is accompanied by Somerset friend and cousin, Mrs Ira Ingham (née Simons) originally from Scott’s Hill Road, Sandys.

A grand star-studded party is set to take place (tomorrow) when Mrs Eileen Tucker marks her 92nd birthday.

Eileen is the daughter of the late Florence and Howard Simons of Scott’s Hill Road, Somerset.

She was the eighth of the couple’s 12 children, out of whom two survive, herself and sister Elsie (Sunny-poo) Thomas who resides in New York. This columnist, like other youngsters growing up in Sandys esteemed the Simons family.

We had to take a back seat! They were all achievers, socially and culturally; and most certainly, predominators when it came to sports.

Nearly half of the Somerset Cup team was made up by Simons Brothers: Arthur, Elliott, O’Brien, Austin (Toes) and latterly Ambrose.

The rest of the Somerset team comprised first cousins of the Simons family. They were the Hunt Brothers: Alma (Champ), Eric, Amon and Delbert (Shark-Eye). When it came to the Simons girls, there were “no flies on them!” Elizabeth was a founder of the St James Church Stage Group.

There were Winifred, Florence and Helen. And we must include their brother Cordova (Knobby), a non cricketer but an outstanding hospitality club owner and operator.

Eileen got married, moved to the Horseshoe Bay, South Shore Road, Southampton area. Raising her own family, Patricia, Victoria, John and Howard Tucker.

They are all fanatical Somerset Cup Match fans, demonstrating convincingly the old saying that apples don’t fall far from the tree.

For example he gained a place in the Somerset team; was an all-rounder and eventually a highly successful Cup Team Captain. His own son, the great Janerio Tucker of present-day vintage, who this past year because of his spectacular records was dubbed Mr Cup Match, notwithstanding his getting out for a duck in Somerset’s first innings.

And then there’s Eileen’s grand son Kwame Tucker. trying to make his mark as a Cup Match wicketkeeper.

Eileen did not intend to make a big thing over her 92nd. All she has to do tomorrow is come outside her home, in her characteristic quiet and charming style, give a royal wave and take it light, being entertained by a host of family and friends who have laid-on the celebration. She’s entitled to it!
