Engine failure leaves pair all at sea

A man and a woman were stranded at sea for two nights after their boat engine failed.

And they were only rescued after a dive boat from Blue Water Diving heard their air horn and went to investigate.

The drama began on Thursday when the pair put to sea in the 17-foot De Wocka Flocka.

The alarm was only raised when they failed to turn up at work on Saturday morning.

A spokesman for Harbour Radio said a search-and-rescue operation started after worried family members called police.

“It was confirmed the vessel had suffered an electrical fault on Thursday evening and they had been disabled offshore since this time, with little food and water on-board,” he said.

The spokesman said the two had put to sea without a VHF radio, no life jackets and their cellphones had flat batteries.

He added that the two had fired off all their flares and were using a foghorn when Blue Waters’ Modern Sinbad steamed to the rescue, where the boat was drifting around five miles west of Wreck Hill in the west end.

The Modern Sinbad towed the boat, normally moored at Mill’s Creek in Pembroke, into Ely’s Harbour early on Saturday morning.

The Harbour Radio spokesman said: “This incident is a timely reminder of the importance and requirements to carry appropriate safety equipment when going offshore and to file a float plan accordingly.”
