Eight-man PHC suffer heavy defeat

Grey Maybury was in the wickets for Somerset

PHC’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Lindo’s T20 competition were dashed at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

Needing to win to keep their chances of progressing beyond the group stage alive, PHC paid a heavy price for turning up with only eight men as host side Somerset recorded an emphatic seven-wicket victory to pick up their second win.

After being asked to bat on an excellent track, PHC were rolled over cheaply with seam bowlers Kwasi James and Greg Maybury inflicting the heaviest damage with the ball.

PHC made a decent start to their innings and were 17 without loss before the wheels came off.

James made the initial breakthrough for Somerset in the fourth over, claiming the scalps of Dean Richards and Charles Trott in quick succession.

James struck again two overs later to dismiss Dante Wellman for a duck to leave PHC reeling at 22 for three, which became 29 for four after Maybury ran out Cory Burgess.

Maybury then removed PHC’s last two batsman to bring the curtains down on the innings in the seventeenth over.

Opening batsman Ellsworth Bean, who scored 17, and wicketkeeper Arthur Richards, who remained unbeaten on ten, were the visiting side’s top scorers.

Maybury finished with two for 11.

In reply, Somerset raced to victory in six overs with Jordan DeSilva, the deputising captain, leading the way with an unbeaten 35 from 14 balls that included three fours and as many sixes. Joshua Gilbert chipped in with 12 at the top of the order.

Jahkari Hollis led PHC’s bowling grabbing two for 38 while Charles Trott claimed the only other wicket for his team.
