A Bermudian herbalist has created a new anti-wrinkle cream — called Cougar.

And Manaie Buchanan is aiming to take her secret blend of herbs, vegetable and fruit extracts to the world stage.

Ms Buchanan, who has been fascinated by natural remedies since she was treated by her herbalist grandmother as a child, said she came up with the cream for herself.

But she shared it with co-workers and friends — and their reaction spurred her on to make her concoction commercially available.

Care home nursing assistant Ms Buchanan said: “I’m a mature women and I looked at my face and I said I needed to do something to keep my face fresh-looking.”

She added: “The feedback I’ve been getting is amazing — people who have tried it have been coming back asking to buy more bottles of it.

Cougar jars feature a map of Bermuda on the back and boasts ‘made in Bermuda’ on the front.

Ms Buchanan said: “I just feel so good about it — and I want to the whole world to know about it.

“I want to show the world we talent in Bermuda and we can make things that can go worldwide.”

She said the first bottle she sold — around a month ago — was to a woman tourist holidaying at the Elbow Beach Hotel after a friend working there recommended it.

Ms Buchanan added: “I really want to export a beautiful product that women — and men — are saying is something great for them.”

Ms Buchanan said she had already had talks with pharmacy companies in Bermuda and hoped to set up a table in stores offering samples and jars of Cougar for sale with a view to getting shops to stock her product.

She added: “We’re going to work on that and they’re considering putting it in their stores.”

Ms Buchanan, from Somerset, said she had studied herbalism for more than 20 years.

She added: “I don’t like putting lotions and things on my face, so I started looking for something like this with herbs, vegetables and fruit extracts.

“I’m not saying what’s in it — but I did a lot of research, tried it out on myself and other people who tried it gave me positive feedback.

the special blend is made up of 17 different extracts from natural sources.

Ms Buchanan said: “It showed me that the natural things in life can work — you just have to know what you’re doing.”

Ms Buchanan said she picked the distinctive name, used to describe self-confident older women with active social lives, because it appealed to the more mature market — who may have started to worry about the odd wrinkle.

She added: “Women I’ve spoken to love the name — it makes women happy and when a woman is happy, everything is going well. And every woman who’s used it has had something good to say about it.”
