A popular health programme designed to get people off the couch and running has gained a new corporate sponsor.

Beat the Couch has been a huge success since it began in February 2013 and last year attracted more than 80 participants.

Now the fitness initiative has been backed by the Argus Group.

Catherine Burns, managing director of Natural Ltd, which runs the programme, said: “We really appreciate the support from the Argus Group. Their sponsorship has allowed us to expand our training options improving the flexibility of the programme.

“No matter how much you want to exercise, sometimes work or family commitments have to come first. By providing 11 different training options a week, we are hoping to meet everyone’s needs.”

The programme provides professional coaching and nutritional support, and aims to get participants ready for a 5k run in just 10 weeks.

On race day the runners jog ahead of a couch-on-wheels pushed by local running duo Chris and Ashley Estwanik.

Mrs Burns added: “Beat the Couch provides a non-intimidating environment in which people are able to form new habits and a really fun event at which they can celebrate their achievements.”

Training sessions for Beat the Couch are provided by professionals Sergio White and Chuck Morgan.

Registration for the new October season of Beat the Couch begins today and the programme starts on October 1.
