I’ve not quit as captain, says Bascome

Oronde Bascome — Captain of the St. George’s Cricket Club.

Oronde Bascome has flatly denied reports on a television station that he has stood down as captain of the St George’s Cup Match team.

The report on Monday said that Bascome had quit as captain, but when contacted yesterday Bascome denied that there was any truth to it.

“I just called them [Bermuda Broadcasting Corporation], they haven’t reached out to myself or the club,” Bascome said.

Bascome, who returns to England today, also stressed that his future as captain of the league and Cup Match teams has not been discussed with the club who were relegated from the Premier Division after losing to Cleveland in their final league match.

“Nothing has officially been done,” Bascome said.

Bascome made his Cup Match debut in 2006 as one of seven colts in the two teams. After being unavailable for the 2008 match, the opener returned to the team in 2009 and was vice-captain to Lionel Cann.

Bascome took over as captain in 2010 at the age of 22 and in 2011 led St George’s to a two-wicket win at Wellington Oval.

Cann returned as captain in the 2012 match which St George’s lost as Bascome was ruled out after surgery, but he was back at the helm in 2013 in the drawn match at Wellington Oval.

This year St George’s, under Bascome, suffered defeat when Somerset comfortably won by eight wickets.
