Hemp out of Uganda trip

Man at work: Hemp

Bermuda will be without David Hemp, the team’s former captain, for next month’s World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Uganda.

Hemp’s name was the most significant omission from a 14-man squad that was announced yesterday by the Bermuda Cricket Board.

However, Lionel Cann, who broke ranks last week to insist that he would not travel to Uganda because of security concerns, has been included.

“I can confirm that David Hemp withdrew from the team due to work commitments,” Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, said. “However, he is fully committed to future tours if selected.”

Fray also confirmed that Stefan Kelly was forced to withdraw from the squad because of school commitments.

Chris Douglas, Derrick Brangman, Deunte Darrell and Rodney Trott and Stephen Outerbridge had previously declared themselves unavailable.

The WCL Divison Three tournament is a 50-overs competition that will act as a qualifier for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.

Bermuda, Nepal, United States, Malaysia, Singapore and Uganda are the Associate nations competing.

The top two teams will be promoted to Division Two and advance to the next phase of qualifiers in Namibia in January, while the third and fourth-placed teams will remain in Division Three. The fifth and sixth-placed teams will drop down to Division Four. The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 26 to November 2.

However, several players have raised security concerns in the aftermath of a foiled terrorist plot in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, where the tournament will be staged.

According to the United States Embassy, security forces stopped a cell of insurgents from al-Shabaab, the jihadist terrorist group, who apparently were planning for an imminent attack.

At least 11 US players have indicated that they are likely to withdraw. According to Fray, the BCB has also raised security concerns to the ICC.

“The BCB will never take any health and security risks with the players,” Fray said. “We have expressed our concerns to the ICC on a regular basis over the last 60 days and we are awaiting their response from our most recent communication.”
