Surprises unlikely in final group games

Willow Cuts and Southampton Rangers look set to reach the final four

The same four teams look set to book places in the semi-finals of the Lindo’s T20 Tournament when group matches are completed on Sunday, with double headers at St David’s, Sea Breeze Oval and Somerset Cricket Club.

St David’s, Southampton Rangers, Bailey’s Bay and Willow Cuts, the top four teams in the Logic Premier Division, are expected to win their groups just as they did a year ago.

Last year group C was the closest fought, with Willow Cuts placing first after finishing level on points with Western Stars and PHC with one win each.

St David’s, the defending champions and whose ground will host next weekend’s semi-finals, look favourites to win group A which contains First Division champions Flatts and Devonshire Rec.

After beating Devonshire Rec, St David’s require a victory over Flatts on Sunday to be certain of winning their group.

The same applies for Cuts who are in a group of four teams. The west enders convincingly beat Somerset last weekend and are expected to defeat Tuff Dogs and PHC this weekend at Somerset to win group B.

Tuff Dogs, of the Evening Cricket League, produced the only surprise in the competition so far when they stopped First Division side PHC in a night match at Somerset.

Some of the lows of the competition include Devonshire Rec being dismissed for just 32 by St David’s and Somerset Bridge scoring 40 against Southampton Rangers.

Somerset have completed their group matches, beating Tuff Dogs and PHC before losing to Cuts.

Bailey’s Bay, who finished third in the league standings, should prove too strong for their rivals in group C, even without Terryn Fray, Tre Manders and Delray Rawlins who have returned to school in England.

Last weekend they beat Cleveland by two wickets, with their spot in the final four looking assured unless St George’s can spring a surprise against them at Sea Breeze Oval.

St George’s will also play Cleveland on Sunday as they look to finish their season on a winning note after being relegated in the league.

St George’s captain Oronde Bascome returned to England this week.

Rangers are the favourites to win group D, having already picked up a win against PHC.

Their match last night at Somerset against Western Stars was postponed because of bad weather.

Next weekend’s semi-finals will be played on Saturday before the season concludes next Sunday with the T20 final at Somerset.
