Make clear what you want to say

Communicate. Today we have so many ways to communicate that I often feel that the real message and meaning often gets lost in the chatter! Whether it be e-mails or instant messaging and yes, even a phone call, too many of us move too fast, act in haste and do not take the time to think through what it is we are really trying to say.

It is apparent that too many times the communication is misunderstood and then inappropriate actions or responses follow. This is all flows from not taking the time to ask one critical question — “what will be the end result of what I say?” (Another way of saying — “always keep the end in mind!”)

When you define your objective clearly by taking the time to think it through — that is, take a pad of paper and a pencil and jot down the key message you want to communicate. I say this because I observe far too many people writing an e-mail and just sending it without any editing process and this can create all sorts of issues. As you work away today and do various means of communication, take the time to ensure that you say what you mean and mean what you say!

“There is more than a verbal tie between the words common, community, and communication.... Try the experiment of communicating, with fullness and accuracy, some experience to another, especially if it be somewhat complicated, and you will find your own attitude toward your experience changing.” - John Dewey
