BEDC to hold ‘blue and green’ industry seminar for aspiring entrepreneurs

Business opportunities for entrepreneurs in blue (water-related) and green industries are the focus of a Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) seminar moderated by Jack Ward, who is the president of Bermuda Environmental Consulting, Ltd and a scientist.

The BEDC event is scheduled for tomorrow, September 25, and will be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

It is described as ‘an industry specific seminar’ and is entitled ‘Green & Blue Economies Matter’. According to a BEDC statement about the seminar, it is designed ‘to help educate potential entrepreneurs on the value of operating a business in the green and blue industries.

There will be personal accounts from entrepreneurs in the two industries including Jamie Smith, the president and chief executive officer of Solar Bermuda Ltd, Ashley Harris, the owner of Hidden Gems of Bermuda Ltd, Choy Aming of Blue Onion Films and Bermuda Shark Project, and Randy Scott, a consultant with Auto Solutions.

“This seminar will help existing and potential entrepreneurs understand what opportunities exist in green and blue industries,” said BEDC.

IThe evenings events will also include a panel discussion focused on the following topics:

— Rules and regulations governing green and blue industries.

— entrepreneurial testimonials of operating in these industries.

— Benefits of starting a business in these industries.

— Trends in the industries.

There will also be a small vendor trade show, as well as a discussion with industry experts Lynniece Nisbett Garnett of the Department of Sustainable Development, Jeane Nikolai, director of the department of energy; Pat Phillip-Fairn, chief product and experiences development officer at BTA and Samia Sarkis, a researcher at department of Conservation Services.

Erica Smith, BEDC executive director and organiser of the seminar said: “There are so many opportunities in these industries and we are excited about providing an opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to learn what their options are.

“Our industry experts will provide guidance around regulatory requirements to get started operating in these industries. I encourage anyone interested in these industries to attend as it will be very informative.”
