Slap on wrist for cursing at police

A woman who admitted cursing at officers investigating the fatal stabbing of Verneil Richardson has been given a conditional discharge.

Shakeda Outerbridge, 25, from Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court earlier to a charge of using offensive words in the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club parking lot. The court had heard that at around 1.30am on June 26 last year, officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the cricket club. When they arrived they discovered Mr Richardson with multiple stab wounds.

He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but died from his injuries. Adam Leroy King later pleaded guilty to the killing, and was sentenced to six years for manslaughter.

In the aftermath of the stabbing, police cordoned off a section of the club’s parking lot to begin their investigation, angering a crowd of patrons who reportedly began to hurl abuse at the officers.

Prosecutors said that Outerbridge was among those insulting the officers, and was heard shouting: “F*** you police. You police are a**holes.”

Defence lawyer Dantae Williams told the court she made the statement while under the effects of Captor spray and after witnessing an assault against Tiffany Glasford, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting an officer, violently resisting arrest and obstructing police in connection to the same incident. Both Outerbridge and Ms Glasford were scheduled to appear before the courts for mention but only Outerbridge was present, with the court hearing that her co-defendant may be in hospital.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced the defendant to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered a warrant for Ms Glasford because her non- appearance.
