Women ready to run for good causes

Estwanik will be among the favourites in the PartnerRe Women's 5K next weekend

Since 1998, the PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run and Walk has raised more than $390,000 for female-related causes in Bermuda, including programmes to fight heart disease, confront physical abuse, support rape victims, educate teenagers, combat breast cancer, and fund equipment and initiatives supporting the treatment of women’s health.

The year marks 17 years of support for women’s causes in Bermuda and, for the 2014 race, all proceeds from entry fees — matched by title sponsor PartnerRe Ltd — will go directly to the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s gestational diabetes project.

The closing date for paper entries is Wednesday at Sportseller, while online entrants have until Friday 5pm via www.racedayworld.com.

Race awards include thousands of dollars in prizes for all age categories, plus fantastic draw prizes and grand draw prizes. Winners of draw prizes must be present at the time of the draw.

For further information, go to www.partnerre5k.bm or register on www.racedayworld.com.

The junior race starts at 8.15am and the adult race starts at 9am. Breakfast will be served afterwards, kindly provided by Cheerios and Butterfield & Vallis.

Most of the top female runners are expected to step up to the start line, including defending champion Ashley Estwanik, Deon Breary, Laura Wright, Krista Dyer, Victoria Fiddick and Jennifer Alen. The coveted podium spots will be hard-fought and it should be an exciting race to watch. Rose-Anna Hoey, as one of the co-organisers, will not be taking part this year.

There will also be a competitive walk section that encourages the Island’s speedy female walkers to take part. For the casual types, a fun run/walk or walk/run along with a stroller are options.

PartnerRe’s sponsors this year’s include Digicel, Strands, KPMG, Bolero, Winner’s Edge, Sportseller, Inner Sanctum, Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel, The Fairmont Southampton Princess, Harry’s, Phoenix Stores, Newstead Belmont Hills and the MarketPlace.
