Thank you for your support, Bermuda

6 October, 2014

Dear Sir,

After spending nearly two years in your wonderful island and helping set up the Regulatory Authority to liberalise the telecom market and trying to make it more competitive, I would like to thank all the supportive people I have come across. I sincerely hope that competition in this sector will continue to increase with carriers competing fairly to provide better innovative services, better quality and better value for money.

It would be difficult to overstate the significance of telecommunications in today’s economy and virtually impossible to overstate its likely importance in the future. In the last thirty years, telecommunications has become the central nervous system of any economy. Telecommunications is even more important in island economies as a means of increasing competitiveness and as a fundamental tool in making other industries ranging from tourism to banking to insurance more innovative.

By means of the wide ranging telecom regulatory reform Bermuda is catching up with the rest of the other jurisdictions. Now it has to look ahead, and innovate through regulation. The Regulatory Authority and the Carriers in Bermuda have young intelligent professional staff who can now push forward the innovations that will go a long way to make Bermuda a more competitive jurisdiction.

Young professionals typically bring a surge of enthusiasm and passion for the telecom sector as well as a natural knack for mastering new technologies.

They are primarily interested in finding solutions to move forward. Their presence and involvement will help carry telecoms in Bermuda successfully into the future.

I wish Bermuda and its people the very best.

Regards

Philip Micallef
