A convicted gunman serving 25 years behind bars had his sentence extended this morning after corrections officers found cannabis in his cell.

Anwar Muhammad, 25, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to possessing about seven grams of cannabis in an increased penalty zone, specifically Westgate Correctional Facility.

The court heard that on the morning of November 30 last year, corrections officers searched Muhammad’s cell.

During the search, a sniffer dog directed officers to the toilet area.

In a drain, officers found a piece of a cell phone, along with six wraps and a large twist, all containing plant material. Tests later confirmed that the material was 7.04g of cannabis.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Muhammad to three months in prison, ordering that the sentence run consecutively to the sentence already being served.

Muhammad is currently serving a 25-year sentence for the attempted murder of Princeton Burrows, who was shot outside the Maximart store in Sandys on August 23, 2010. While he denied the offence, Muhammad was forensically linked to the shooting by a shoe, which he accidentally left at the scene.

While the Supreme Court initially ordered that Muhammad serve half of that sentence before becoming eligible for parole, that term was subsequently reduced to ten years on appeal.
