Spin king Brangman bags top award

Big impact: Brangman, left, is presented with the Premier Division MVP award by Vicky Coelho, of Logic, and BCB president Lloyd Fray

The Premier Division MVP award remained at Southampton Rangers for a second straight season, this time won by spin bowler Derrick Brangman who was the top wicket- taker in the Logic Premier Division with 33 dismissals.

He also scored 110 runs and took nine catches to beat out team-mate Dion Stovell, last year’s winner and this season’s top run scorer, at Saturday night’s Bermuda Cricket Board awards ceremony at Gosling’s Wine Cellar.

Another Rangers player, captain Janeiro Tucker, won the award for most catches in the Premier Division (12) while Kijuan Franks took home the First Division award for most catches (7).

Claiming individual honours helped in someway to make up for Rangers’ second place finish in the league and their failure to hold on to their Belco Cup title.

“I’m excited about the trophy, I had a good season and next year I hope to get more wickets and for my team to win the league,” Brangman said.

“I got three five-wicket hauls and could have had four. We had a good season, with ups and downs, but that’s what teams go through to get better. Our goal was to win the league but we didn’t do it. We’ll just come back next year and try again.”

Franks of Flatts — ironically Brangman’s football team-mate at Devonshire Cougars — was voted the First Division MVP after leading his team to promotion by claiming a division high of 24 wickets (tied with Seth Campbell of Western Stars) and scoring 245 runs.

Without the burden of captaincy, Franks was able to concentrate more on his game and he responded with some match-winning performances for his team.

“The team goal was definitely promotion and we achieved that,” Franks said. “We didn’t play consistent cricket like I would have wanted us to but we got the job done so I’m definitely proud of my team.

“As far as my personal awards, I couldn’t have done it without the team. I definitely worked on my bowling this year, particularly my line and length and it paid off for me.

“It was a personal decision to make Cofield [Robinson] the captain and it did pay off because I wanted to concentrate on my game to benefit the team.”

Franks played in the first St George’s Cup Match trial and admits that playing in Cup Match is a goal of his. “I feel I can contribute but that’s up to St George’s,” he said. “I’ll definitely be trying out for Cup Match next year.”

The annual ceremony had 26 awards presented by Wayne Scott, the Sports Minister. Also presented were the league trophies to St David’s and Flatts, the Logic Premier and First Division champions, with both clubs also receiving $1,000 towards cricket expenses from Logic.

Clay Smith, who guided Cleveland to the Eastern Counties title after a 33-year wait, was voted by the league’s captains as the best coach, while Emmerson Carrington was voted by the captains as the Umpire of the Year.

Seth Campbell of Western Stars and Alex Dore of Southampton Rangers were the Logic First Division and Premier Division Emerging Players of the Year. Campbell claimed 24 wickets at 11.71 each, while Dore, also the captain of the Bermuda Under-17 team, scored 259 runs. Both players received a $200 gift certificate donated by CellOne.

For the second year in a row, Somerset Bridge won the Chivas Team sportsmanship Award, chosen by the umpires.

A special Achievement Award was presented to former umpire Randy Butler. He began his umpiring career in 1982 and finished in 2008 and umpired in the 1995, ‘96 and ‘97 Cup Matches.

During his time as an umpire, Butler held the position of president of the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association for nine years and also served as vice-president and secretary of the Association.

He was also the BCUA education officer for over ten years and served for six years as Area One vice-president of the West Indies Umpires Association.

The district included the United States, Canada, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.

In 1997 Butler officiated in the ICC Tournament in Malaysia and that same year he was awarded the Bermuda Government’s Sports Citation for his outstanding service to sport in Bermuda.

He has also umpired in Jamaica, Canada, Argentina and England. Awards list, page 22
