Shelter from the storm

A windy and somewhat damp night was nonetheless passed comfortably by about 50 residents of the Salvation Army’s ageing shelter on North Street during Tropical Storm Fay.

Divisional commander Frank Pittman said both the emergency shelter and the Harbour Light facility had endured Fay’s impact early Sunday — but he was still waiting for a performance update on West End shelters, which yesterday were affected by problems with phone service.

Staff member Lionel Cann said the North Street facility had sustained some broken windows and leaks in its roof, but had withstood Fay well considering its advanced age.

“Those old places are still better than some houses,” he said. “We need to replace them, but they’re still holding up.”

This came despite a couple of trees coming down on the facility, he said.

Added shelter manager Jamel Bean: “The main thing we’ve had is to get the large trees on top of the men’s living quarters. One of these is up there in a place where you can’t just climb up and cut it down. But considering how things are, we made do — we did have a window that blew out, but everybody seemed to be okay.”

Anyone assisting with recovery efforts in the wake of the storm, and able to help with maintenance at the shelter, is asked to call its main office number at 295-5310.
