Gonzalo’s impact a virtual certainty

Hurricane Gonsalvo's likely course as of 9am today

Forecasters are confident in their predictions that Hurricane Gonzalo will swerve and hit Bermuda in much the manner that has been plotted all week — mainly because of larger meteorological forces at work in the Atlantic.

Asked why the Bermuda Weather Service could be so sure of a Fabian-style hit tomorrow, BWS director Kimberley Zuill pointed to an extensive front exiting the East Coast of the US — plus an area of high pressure to Bermuda’s northeast.

“The high pressure is what’s giving us these very subtle conditions since Tropical Storm Fay,” Ms Zuill explained, referring to the cool weather in the aftermath of Sunday’s storm.

Hurricane Gonzalo, which had been wandering in a rough course towards the US, will push up against the offshore frontal system, prompting the storm to swerve northward.

“The front acts as a bumper,” Ms Zuill said.

In tandem with the influence of that large area of high pressure, Hurricane Gonzalo will swerve into a north-easterly “hook”, she said.

That swerving motion will have begun last night — hence the hurricane’s apparent beeline for Bermuda, which is predicted to continue throughout today, resulting in worsening weather by this evening.
