Clothes shop burgled during hurricane

The owners of Flatts Menswear have spoken of their disgust at burglars who broke into the shop after Hurricane Gonzalo knocked out power in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Manager Jennifer Lindo and her father, store owner Mickey Adderley, discovered the break-in later in the morning.

Mrs Lindo said: “They broke in through the door — we suspect it was around about 4am.

“A neighbour called and said the door had been broken open.

“They took advantage of the power being out: the alarm system was out and the cameras that we have won’t have picked them up.

“It’s someone who knew what they were doing.”

Mrs Lindo, who lost a substantial part of the roof of her home on Harrington Hundreds Road during the hurricane, said it was awful to deal with a break-in as well as storm damage at home.

“There is a lot of merchandise has been taken. They destroyed the cash register trying to get cash to discover there was no cash inside.”

Mr Adderley said he was used to burglaries after 50 years in business and would open today as normal if possible.

“If someone wants to buy something, we’ll be open for business.”
