A day in the life of koi ‘Beatles’

Run for your life: Zoe Mulholland’s cat, Mario, looks longingly at her koi fish which were relocated to the bathtub during Hurricane Gonzalo

Hurricane Gonzalo was a scary time for most people on the Island, but for one cat it seemed like a dream come true — free sushi.

Pet lover Zoe Mulholland brought her koi fish inside to be safe during the storm. Her cat, Mario, sat for hours by the bathtub, staring at them with obvious longing.

“We were scared our koi fish would die if left in their pond,” said the Warwick resident.

“We launched ‘Operation Koi Relocation’.”

She bought her koi ten years ago for $10 a piece.

“They have sentimental value,” she said.

“Some of my fish died during Hurricane Fabian in 2003 and I wanted to avoid that happening again. During Fabian they were left in their pond which got too much salt in it, so this time around The Beatles — we only have John, George and Paul left — were relocated to my mother’s bathtub. They were stressed to begin with but adapted well.”

She said although Mario watched the fish intently, he left them alone.

“He was watching when we put them back in the pond on Saturday and then he went to investigate the bathtub again, checking to see if it was the same fish,” said Ms Mulholland.

The remaining koi Beatles are now happily back in their outdoor pond.
