Soldier hurt in quarry accident

A Regiment soldier’s leg was broken yesterday when he was hit by a car as he helped direct traffic near the Government Quarry in the Shark Hole area of Harrington Sound Road, Hamilton Parish, just after 11am.

The 29-year-old soldier from Devonshire, who has not been named, suffered a broken fibula and cuts and bruises and was treated by first aid-trained soldiers before being taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where his leg was put in a splint.

“Given the context of the incident, his injuries were relatively minor, and in the spirit of the Regiment, he got plastered up and came back to Warwick Camp to collect his kit before going home,” said Regiment Adjutant Major Ben Beasley.

“Luckily, he escaped serious injury, but it is a reminder that the work we are doing to get the Island back on its feet again is not without risk.”

A police spokesman said: “It appears that a male Bermuda Regiment soldier was directing motorists in the area, as traffic flow had been reduced to one lane while the other lane was being cleared of debris, when a car collided with him.”

Any witnesses are asked to contact PC Stephen Allen at the Southside Police Station on telephone number 293-2222.
