The Post Office’s Processing Centre has been closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Gonzalo.

The building sustained damage during the Category 3 hurricane and there remains a hole in the roof of the structure.

A Government spokesman said this evening that the closure may result in temporary delays in the processing and delivery of mail.

The closure comes after tests for the presence of asbestos in the building proved negative.

A statement released by The Ministry of National Security tonight stated: “Out of an abundance of caution, the Bermuda Post Office’s Mail Processing Centre at the L.F. Wade International Airport has been closed.

“This follows two series of tests for the presence of asbestos both of which proved negative.

“There is a hole in the roof of the structure and on the advice of the Government’s Health & Safety Officer, the Bermuda Post Office has closed the facility with a view to shifting mail processing operations to an alternate location.

“Since Tropical Storm Fay and in the aftermath of this weekend’s hurricane, the facility has been tested to ensure that the area was not putting the health of employees at risk.

“The closure may result in temporary delays in the processing and delivery of mail, but every effort will be taken to minimise this for the public.”
