An exciting, rewarding trip

Dramatic time: Saltus drama students theatre immersion at Stratford Festival in Canada

Saltus Director of Performing Arts Mrs Lisa Maule reported that 18 Saltus Drama students (from Years 10, 11 and 12) enjoyed an exciting and rewarding trip to the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada.

Lessons and workshops, given by both Head of Drama, Ms Sara Kelly, and onsite professionals, cemented students’ learning which will be incorporated into their evaluation coursework. Most students chose to write on the stunning performance of Brecht’s Mother Courage.

A wild production of Alice through the Looking Glass and a very creative interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream the following day gave students an opportunity to experience two traditional plays in a completely new setting with six of the students having ringside seats and joining in the action on stage!

The Beaux’ Stratagem by Farquhar provided a good example of Restoration theatre and the historical context behind the playwright’s ideas.

Prior to the one musical students attended, Crazy for You, talented Lighting student S11 Ryan Day met with one of the longest standing lighting professionals at Stratford, whom he shadowed for the final check before being invited to follow the show from the lighting box — with over 500 lights to manage, it was a real eye-opener for Ryan! In addition to attending performances, a tour of the Costume Warehouse offered an insight into the manpower required backstage to mount professional productions, ie, 7 to 8 backstage people to every actor!

The final day was spent in Toronto and included shopping, a visit to the City’s new Aquarium (well worth a visit!), and a chance to watch the Blue Jays play the Seattle Mariners at the Rogers Centre.

Altogether an unforgettable experience!
