No asbestos at GPO

Hamilton’s main post office facility has been tested and cleared for asbestos, according to a Public Works spokesman.

The Royal Gazette understands that some staff at the General Post Office had voiced concerns about possible asbestos in the building, which was closed in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fay’s impact on October 12.

“Two series of tests for the presence of asbestos have proved negative for the General Post Office, so the building is safe for employees to occupy,” the spokesman said yesterday. It came shortly after the Bermuda Post Office’s mail processing centre at LF Wade International Airport, also damaged by Fay, was closed due to a hole in the roof. Tests for asbestos at that facility were also negative.
