Mother denies cheque fraud

A mother of two has denied cheque fraud involving a 95-year-old woman.

Tianna Paiva, 29, from My Lord’s Bay, Hamilton Parish, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to seven charges related to stealing or dishonestly receiving cheques, using cheques she filled out herself to obtain cash from a bank teller, and prowling.

Among the charges are that between August 8 and September 18, she allegedly obtained cheques belonging to 95-year-old Renee Barton, from Seabright Avenue, Paget.

Ms Paiva is also accused of prowling at Ms Barton’s home on September 16.

The Crown alleges that the accused obtained $1,850 fraudulently and attempted to get another $1,000 on dates between August 8 and September 22.

Ms Paiva, who brought her four-year-old daughter to court, was given $2,000 bail with one surety.

Magistrate Archibald Warner also ordered that she stay away from Ms Barton’s street.

The case was adjourned for mention until November 12.
