Firefighters open doors

Firefighters are throwing open the doors of their stations to the public next week as part of efforts to educate the community about safety.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Safety Awareness Week opens on Monday and will be officially launched by Michael Dunkley, the Premier and Minister of National Security, at Hamilton Fire Station’s recreation hall.

This year’s theme is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Today” and there will be a focus on promoting fire safety in the kitchen.

Advice on the proper use of fire extinguishers will also be offered.

The opening ceremony begins at 10am with an introduction from Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dana Lovell and a speech by Chief Fire Officer Lloyd Burchall.

Mr Dunkley will be invited to give a short speech and to read a proclamation to officially open the awareness week, which runs until November 7.

There will be guided tours of various displays and activities for visiting children.

Guided tours will be available at the Island’s three fire stations from Tuesday to Thursday, and there will be a fire safety show at Hamilton Station.

Further details, other than a closing ceremony at 4pm, are not yet available. For more information about events, call 292-5555.
