Lady Bluebirds reclaim their crown

Lady Bluebirds claimed more honours

Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds got their season off to a winning start after adding the Sylvia Eastley Tournament title to their trophy cabinet last weekend.

The Senior Winter League champions beat Blazzin Bluebirds 21-15 in Saturday’s final at Bernard Park to reclaim the title they lost to Warwick Panthers the previous season.

It was the first time in Social Club’s history that two of their teams were pitted against each other in a final.

“It was a good match and Lady Bluebirds were proud that another Young Men’s Social Club team were in the final,” Danielle Raynor, the Lady Bluebirds goal shooter, said.

“In our final match one of our goals was to minimise opportunities of shots being scored by sharp-shooter Fredericka Samuels.

“Overall, it felt good to be back on the court — and playing with Young Men’s Social Club is always enjoyable.”

Lady Bluebirds went all the way to the title unbeaten.

The champions elect topped group A during the round-robin stage after recording convincing victories against Bluebirds Too, 17-3, and Signworx Netts, 12-5.

Lady Bluebirds then avenged last year’s final loss to Panthers that denied them a hat-trick of Sylvia Eastley titles, prevailing against the latter 15-10 in the semi-finals to set up a final showdown with Blazzin Bluebirds.

Blazzin Bluebirds topped group B on goal difference after finishing level on points with Panthers.

The tournament runners-up beat North Village Lady Rams 10-7 but were held to a 7-7 tie against Panthers, who were also unbeaten during the group stage.

Blazzin Bluebirds reached the final after defeating Netts 10-8 in the semi-finals.
