Some underground cabling makes sense

Topic: A letter writer believes the Island should put some power lines underground

October 31, 2014

Dear Sir,

Considering where I live I haven’t seen much progress in terms of fixing poles, I would only say I also agree if some wires were underground Belco workers wouldn’t still be struggling with such issues. For a whole completion of underground wiring, $375 million you say? Why not put wires underground around areas that have trees then? This means Hamilton and areas such as that one.

What would the cost be then? Surely it wouldn’t be $375 million still to do so, how does Belco feel about that move?

Yes, putting lines underground in total is costly, I agree, but I’m sure not everywhere in Bermuda needs big time poles with electrical lines going across them either (Airport, KEMH, areas where there’s lots of trees, to name a few). Think of the time saved with so few poles to deal with.
