Man is warned about shouting threats

A Devonshire man who cursed at a neighbour after she called the police to complain about his shouting was sentenced yesterday to time already served in custody.

Chesterfield Robinson, 54, pleaded guilty to a charge of using threatening words towards Sharon Ales on March 29 this year.

The court heard that earlier in the day Ms Ales called police because Robinson, who lived on the neighbouring property, had been loudly raving and shouting for several hours.

Officers arrived at the scene and, after speaking to Ms Ales, approached Robinson about the complaint. While he initially appeared upset, questioning why the officers were “harassing” him, he eventually quieted down.

When police left the area, Ms Ales heard him shouting again, but this time his words were directed at her.

Among other things, Robinson allegedly began shouting: “I’m going to kill you, you f****** b****. Just you wait and see. I’m going to get you.”

Ms Ales called the police again, who returned to the scene and arrested Robinson for using threatening words.

Robinson was set to appear in court for the offence earlier this year, but was arrested early on Monday morning after he failed to attend. Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo subsequently remanded Robinson into custody.

Returning to court yesterday morning, Robinson pleaded guilty to the offences, but told the court that he had no problem with Ms Ales and that he did not believe he said everything that had been attributed to him.

“I didn’t mean those words that I said because I really didn’t know this lady at the time,” he said. “I didn’t see the lady face-to-face.”

Mr Tokunbo responded that it was probably a good thing that Robinson hadn’t confronted the complainant face-to-face, as it would likely have frightened her even more.

Prosecutor Larissa Burgess said that, while the complainant said the shouting episodes had taken place fairly frequently, there was no indication that the behaviour continued after the incident before the court.

Mr Tokunbo sentenced Robinson to time served, warning him: “You must not threaten this lady or cause any disturbance to her because if you come back here, I’m going to deal with you more seriously.”
