Bermudian is jailed for 16 years after UK rape

Locked up: Andrew Williams

A Bermudian man has been jailed for 16 years in Britain after being convicted of raping and repeatedly assaulting a woman over a three-day period.

Andrew Williams, 29, was found guilty in Snaresbrook Crown Court of rape and causing grievous bodily harm to the victim.

While originally from Bermuda, Williams was residing in Clapton, Hackney, northeast London, at the time of the offence.

According to Met Police, the court heard that Williams had been in a relationship with the 42-year-old victim for about a month before he became violent towards her.

On January 31, Williams lured her to his mother’s home in Upper Clapton, where for three days he subjected the victim to repeated and sustained violent assaults, beating her with a chair leg and his belt buckle, while his mother and sister were in an adjoining room.

The victim said she had sex with Williams, but did so only out of fear for what would happen if she refused.

She was eventually able to escape on February 2 and call police, and Williams was arrested later that day in nearby Stoke Newington.

According to the Hackney Gazette, Williams told the court that the victim had come to his mother’s home to get her hair cut and stayed because it did not come out well and she did not want to be seen.

He was convicted in August and during a hearing last week was sentenced to 16 years behind bars for both offences, with the time served to run concurrently. Two thirds of the sentence will be served in custody, followed by an extended licence period of five years.

Williams will also be subject to a Sexual Prevention Order and has been placed on the Sex Offender Registry in the UK for life.

The judge presiding over the case was quoted as saying: “When you finally let her leave, she was in a desperate state. The beating that you handed out to her was so extreme her own sister could not recognise her.”

Detective Constable Kevin Christou, from Hackney’s Community Safety Unit, said: “Andrew Williams is a dangerous individual and the sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending.

“Officers from Hackney Community Safety Unit continue to support the victim and I am hopeful the sentencing of Williams will allow some closure and help her to move forward to rebuild her life.

“The length of the sentence demonstrates that police and the courts take domestic abuse seriously; victims of abuse will be given all possible support by the Metropolitan Police Service.”
