Time is no barrier: A history lesson with a difference as children re-enact the past

On October 24 Warwick Academy students travelled back in time. The primary department held its annual history day!

Many students arrived at school dressed as someone in history.

Each year group participated in history related activities and teachers organised re-enactments of historical events.

Roaming our halls were Cleopatra, Albert Einstein, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Goodall, Juli Lynne Charlot, medieval queens, rock stars, and cavemen.

Even our principal, Mrs Woods, dressed up as a hippie from the 1960s.

Year 1 students learned their primary colours and did outstanding art work based on Piet Mondrian’s style using black, straight lines and boxes painted in primary colours. The year 2 pupils learned and played Victorian games like kick the can.

They also made a creative, homemade Victorian doll out of clothes pins and fabric.

Next door, the year 3 classes learned about the development of new and old communication.

Afterwards, they went around the school leaving messages hoping that their classmates could find them.

At lunch time, year 4 classmates had a delicious Roman feast.

The students also bought food from an authentic Roman market with fake Roman money.

After lunch, the year 5 students watched a movie about Vikings. The year 6 students divided into groups; the Saxons, Vikings and Normans. They all made weapons out of cardboard and participated in the battle of Hastings.

The music teacher, Mr Bishop, taught chants to use during the battle.

All in all it was a stupendous way for the students to learn about the past.

They all found it really lively and had such a tremendous time. They did not even know they were learning.

Certainly this was a day that made history!
