Mallory and Jones topple Costa Rica

Bright future: Bermuda’s Mallory has impressed in Mexico

Bermuda achieved a milestone at the Cotecc Under-12 Masters tournament in Mexico.

The Island’s two-man team of Trey Mallory and Benjamin Jones got the better of Costa Rica in their final pool A match.

It is understood to have been the first time that Bermuda have beaten Costa Rica

“For as long as I have competed or coached internationally we have never beaten Costa Rica,” Steve Bean, the Bermuda coach, said.

“Whatever age group, boys or girls, we have never beaten them so that victory was especially sweet for me.”

Jones got the ball rolling for Bermuda against Costa Rica after coming from behind to defeat Ignacio Mora 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the opening singles match.

“Ben did an excellent job in overcoming his opponent because he is so good,” Bean said.

Mallory took less time to clinch the series for Bermuda, dispatching Julian Lozano 6-3, 6-0 in the remaining singles clash.

“Trey is the future of our tennis and he looks like he belongs out here on the same level as the best of them,” Bean said. “To be at their level without as much tennis as them shows how much talent Trey has.”

Bermuda were denied the clean sweep after Mallory and Jones went down 7-5, 7-5 in the doubles. Mallory and Jones blew a chance to force a third set after surrendering a 5-1 lead in the second set.

Bermuda placed third in pool A with a record of one win and two defeats against host country Mexico and top seeds Guatemala.

The Island faced Bahamas yesterday in a play-off to determine the fifth through eighth, which was cut short because of heavy rain.

“We started against Bahamas in the morning but couldn’t get through the first match,” Bean said.

“We are going to try and play twice tomorrow to finish because all of the teams leave on Friday.”

Bermuda advanced to the second round of the tournament after placing second among the English speaking countries in the first round held in St Lucia in August.

The top two countries in Mexico will advance to the next round of the tournament, where they will battle it out against the United States and Canada for a place in the finals to be held in Europe.
