Final-day washout for tennis pair

Bermuda tennis ace Mallory

Bermuda’s involvement at the Cotecc Under-12 Masters Tournament in Mexico ended prematurely yesterday as heavy downpours made it impossible for any matches to be played on the final day.

The Island’s team of Trey Mallory and Benjamin Jones were scheduled to resume a play-off with Bahamas — a match that had been washed out on Wednesday — to determine fifth through eighth.

Bermuda placed third in pool A with one win and two defeats against host country Mexico and top-seeds Guatemala. It is understood that the Island’s victory against Costa Rica was the first against the Central Americans at all levels.

Bermuda qualified for the second round of the tournament after placing second among the English-speaking countries in the first round held in St Lucia in August.

The top two countries in Mexico will advance to the next round of the tournament, where they will battle it out against the United States and Canada for a place in the finals to be held in Europe.

Mallory and Jones were accompanied in Mexico by Steve Bean, the national youth coach.
