Road race set to add to its rich history

Last year’s winner: Butterfield, the Ironman triathlete

The second-oldest road race in Bermuda returns this Sunday, 42 years after it was first held.

One of only three half-marathons annually staged on the Island, the BNAA/Hannover Re race has an impressive history stretching back to its inaugural event in March 1972.

The only Island road race with a longer history is the Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby, which dates back to 1909.

Last year Tyler Butterfield, Bermuda’s Ironman triathlete and two-times Olympian, won in 1hr 20min 27sec. The fastest woman was Victoria Fiddick, in 1:35:11.

Butterfield is currently based in Australia for their summer.

Sunday’s race, which has been held on a variety of routes during the past four decades, will start and finish outside the Botanical Gardens’ south gate.

Competitors will do a two-mile loop towards Hamilton, turning around near BUEI on East Broadway, before running back past the Botanical Gardens and east along South Road.

Half-marathon athletes will go as far as a turnaround point on Paynter’s Road before retracing their steps to the finish. A 10K race, held in conjunction with the main race, will have a turnaround point near the top of McGall’s Hill on South Road.

There will be prizes for the top three in each age division in both races, as well as for the overall winners. Both the half-marathon and 10K will start at 8am. Entries can be made online until 5pm on November 14 at www.racedayworld.com.
