Open forum on restorative justice

The concept of restorative Justice — seeing an offence through both the victim and the offender’s eyes — has been discussed in an open forum here in Bermuda.

Residents were informed at a presentation held on Wednesday night in the auditorium of City Hall.

In the UK, Restorative Justice saw a $7 million seven year research programme funded by the Home Office. As a result of the research four reports were produced to form the basis of Restorative Justice practices.

The practice aims to provide benefits for both the victims and offenders of crime. For the victims, it aims to give them a voice, offer them a chance to confront the offender and reduce the desire for retaliation. It also aims to put victims back in control of their lives.

Among the possible benefits for an offender is allowing them to take responsibility for the harm they have caused, to apologise and restore their moral compass.
