Church’s $2,000 gift to charity

Pastor Joseph Whalen and Marsden members Janet Maynard and Mario Thompson present two food vouchers to Laurie Shiell, executive director of the Centre against Abuse

A church has donated nearly $2,000 to assist victims of domestic violence.

Food vouchers worth $300 each have been given to two clients of the Centre Against Abuse by Marsden First United Methodist Church.

The church also made a separate donation of $1,110 to assist the charity.

The generous funding was presented to the Centre’s executive director, Laurie Shiell, by Pastor Joseph Whalen and Marsden members Janet Maynard and Mario Thompson.

The church is also offering assistance to those who remain in need following last month’s storms.

Food vouchers are on offer, as is help with cleaning contaminated water tanks.

Marsden said it had secured a grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

“Although Marsden suffered major damage to its roof and was without power for a number of days, it is nonetheless concerned about reaching out beyond its four walls to extend the love of Jesus Christ to those in need,” the church said.
