Teen stole bike while wearing electronic tag

A 19-year-old motorcycle thief was tracked down by Police after stealing the bike while wearing an electronic monitoring device.

Jarico Burt, from Wilkinson Avenue, Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to taking without consent.

The court heard the electronic monitoring device he was wearing put him at the scene of the robbery at the Williams Estate, Smith’s, on July 18.

He admitted taking a white Yamaha motorcycle belonging to Nigel Williams and he has a previous conviction for taking without consent.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report and set a sentencing date of January 6, releasing Burt on $3,000 bail with one like surety.

A co-accused, Kawesi Smith, 18, from Cherry Lane, Warwick, pleaded not guilty to taking without consent in relation to the same incident.

He also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of receiving stolen goods, the white motorcycle, between July 18 and August 11, and not guilty to driving the same bike carelessly without due care and attention on Middle Road on August 11.

Mr Tokunbo adjourned the case against Mr Smith until December 2 for mention and set bail at $2,000 with one like surety.
