Plans to expand ambulance coverage

Ambulances are to be stationed at Clearwater and Port Royal Fire Stations

Ambulances will be stationed at Clearwater and Port Royal Fire Stations as part of a plan to improve emergency coverage in the East and West End.

The proposals were first unveiled in the Throne Speech by Governor George Fergusson earlier this month.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board has now provided further details about the comprehensive plans to extend ambulance coverage.

A BHB spokeswoman told The Royal Gazette that the new service is expected to be launched in 2015.

“Bermuda Hospitals Board is very pleased to be partnering with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service in order to reduce the transit time for patients to hospital from either end of the Island,” she said.

“Details and formal approvals are being finalised, but essentially there will be an ambulance stationed at the Clearwater Fire Station in St David’s, and the other at the Port Royal Fire Station in Southampton.

“We look forward to launching the new service in the New Year when specifics of the initiative will be shared.”

During the Throne Speech, Governor Fergusson, revealed that the House of Assembly would be told of “a comprehensive plan to extend ambulance coverage in the Eastern and Western ends of the Island whilst maintaining the core service in the Central parishes” during the upcoming Parliamentary session.

“Specifically, the Bermuda Hospitals Board Ambulance Service and the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service will partner to ensure an improved emergency response across the Island,” he said. “These jointly manned ambulances will ensure a timely response to emergencies in the Eastern, Western and Central Parishes.”
