Road crashes at lowest level since February

Road accidents are down

Road crashes have fallen to their lowest level since February.

There were 113 collisions last month compared with 127 in September, 123 in August and a peak of 148 in June.

Last month’s crashes included two fatal accidents and 60 in which people were injured, police statistics reveal.

The rest of the collisions resulted in damage to vehicles only.

Up until the end of last month, there had been 1,211 road accidents so far this year.

Last month’s figure is down nearly 30 per cent compared with the 160 crashes during October last year, although only one person died on the road that month.

Seventy-one people were injured in road accidents last month, including 12 seriously, although no one had to be treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Police said the main cause of accidents was inattention, which caused 38 of the collisions, followed by inexperienced drivers causing 13 of the crashes.

Entering the road carelessly, overtaking improperly, following too closely and reversing carelessly were also blamed.

Private cars were involved in 42.3 per cent of accidents, with motorcycles involved in 23.3 per cent, trucks 17.5 per cent, livery cycles 5.3 per cent, auxiliary cycles 4.8 per cent, taxis 3.2 per cent, pedal cycles 2.6 per cent and public service vehicles (PSV) 1 per cent.

Most of those involved were between the ages of 41 and 50, 23.6 per cent, followed by those aged 51 to 60 on 21.6 per cent. Those between 31 and 40 made up 19.6 per cent of those involved.

Seventy females were among those in the accidents, along with 129 men.

This week has been designated Road Safety Week by the Bermuda Road Safety Council and members have been visiting schools and talking to the public about driving carefully.
