Sports Mailbox: Secrets lie in team reports

Dear Sir,

On November 26, the Bermuda Cricket Board will hold its Annual General Meeting.

It seems that a new board will be elected before the state of our cricket comes under the microscope. Or, will it be left for the new board to sort out?

The Shadow Minister for Sport, Michael Weeks, had suggested that an inquiry should take place but the information to assist in finding many of the problems is in the reports.

This is the elephant in the room.

I have one suggestion for every potential candidate vying for a position.

If you want have a good look under the hood before you commit to being a board member, ask Sport Minister Wayne Scott and Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, to allow you to see the senior team managers’ reports from the last three international tours, including the one held here in Bermuda.

The manager oversees the team from the time the tour squad is picked to the time they return to the Island.

He records everything, good and bad, right and wrong.

From who shows up for training, who is on insulin because of diabetics or other personal problems, who the players room-mates are, what each player’s diet is, who failed the drug test, who faces disciplinary action or misbehaves while on tour.

What we see or hear about on the field is the end result of what happened off the field.

His report, if properly and honestly submitted, will have everything the board will require to find out what went on throughout the period. It is priceless information.

This is the only recorded information about the tour other than the scorebook.

The current manager, Lionel Tannock, is a long-serving and experienced manager and his reports should reflect the importance of a true and honest report and the big part it plays in the overall cricket administration.
