Sports Mailbox: Smith is top man for the job

Top coach: Smith

Dear Sir,

Like most Bermuda cricket fans, I was disappointed with our performance at the recent Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament. As most will know, we finished in last place and were relegated to Division Four.

I will resist the temptation to point fingers or cast blame on anyone; rather, I would prefer to focus on what can be done to rectify the situation and get Bermuda cricket back on track. What I would suggest is that the Bermuda Cricket Board immediately sits down with former Bermuda captain Clay Smith and offer him a three-year contract as Bermuda’s coach.

Why Clay? Primarily for the following three reasons:

• He has the respect of the Bermuda players. As a former player, he has achieved more individual success than anyone in the past 40 years. Centuries in Cup Match, ICC competitions and even the Red Stripe Bowl place him head and shoulders above the rest.

• He has proven himself a winner at domestic level, winning numerous honours with St George’s as a player, winning honours with St David’s as a player-coach and recently coaching Cleveland County to the Eastern Counties title, their first in decades.

• He retains passion for the local game and is very much involved in it on a weekly basis, both as a club coach and newspaper columnist. This means he is intimately aware of what is going on in our domestic game, who our better players are and what must be done to get the best out of them.
