Students honoured

Exemplary: Wayne Scott, Minister of Community and Cultural Development, stands with recipients of the Young Citizens Awards from schools across the Island on the International Day of the Child

Shining examples of young people helping each other to be the best were commended by Community Minister Wayne Scott at the Young Citizens Awards Ceremony yesterday.

The eleventh annual event, offered by the Department of Child and Family Services, celebrated 42 outstanding students from schools around the Island.

“Bermuda’s future is now,” Mr Scott told the luncheon at The Fairmont Southampton.

“The students we honour today are already stepping up and doing their best to build a better Bermuda, and it is our intention to keep them involved in mapping out their future.”

A National Youth Policy, pledged in the latest Throne Speech as a means of giving the Island’s youth a voice in decisions, will be shaped by the input of students and young adults, the Minister said.

The students were called up to the stage and applauded in turn for their citizenship qualities within their schools and communities.

The event coincided with the United Nations’ Universal Day of the Child.
