Woolridge tastes defeat

Woolridge lost his opening bout

Jermal Woolridge’s hopes of achieving glory at the Sanda World Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia, suffered a setback yesterday.

Woolridge lost 2-1 to Omar Mamdouh Ali Ali Badr, of Egypt, in his opening round-robin contest in the 90Kg weight class.

The Bermudian, who is the top seed in his division, got off to a promising start after winning the first round.

But Badr came roaring back to win the second round and extend the match to a winner-takes-all third round.

Badr then completed his comeback by winning the third round to claim the win.

Woolridge will face Mostafa Khalatbari in his final round-robin match today.

Also representing Bermuda in Indonesia is Woolridge’s cousin, Sentwali, who received a first-round bye yesterday in the 70kg division.

Senwali will face Achraf Haddadi, of Tunisa, in his opening match today.

Haddadi suffered defeat against Li Shen, of China, in his opening match yesterday.
